Il giardino di notte

IL GIARDINO DI NOTTE

2020 – 2021

2020 – 2021 Work winner of the contest Cantica21 from Italian Ministry of Culture – MiBACT- DGCC and Ministry of Foreign Affairs – MAECI-DGSP, for public collection of Casa Masaccio – Centro per l’arte Contemporanea, San Giovanni Valdarno, Arezzo.

The work presents a vision similar to that which one would have going into a painter’s studio: two framed canvases arranged on the wall, on the ground pieces of cutted canvas and, in the corners, rolls of canvas of various sizes randomly placed in space depending on the environment. Everything appears ready to be painted. In reality, on the surfaces that appear empty in the sunlight, an image of nocturnal flora is painted, made with pigments called “rare earths” with phosphorescent properties. Suspended between representations of real and imaginary plants, the image of a phantom nocturnal garden temporarily inhabits the surfaces every night, illuminating the space around it.

Il giardino di notte is a work conceived with the use of some phosphorescent pigments that belong to the group of minerals called “rare earths”. These minerals are today at the center of the world debate as a new economic resource capable of shifting the geopolitical and economic balances, as their use is indispensable in the development of current technologies, and are found within all devices such as smartphones and computers. .

At the center of the work is the relationship between man and landscape understood as an artificial place of a social construction that manipulates the relationship with the territory and, at the same time, rewrites the imaginary, conveying it in the form of images. In this construction genre painting, especially landscape painting, has played a fundamental role in building a canonized vision.

The title of the work is a reference to a type of garden, in use since ancient times, made up of plants whose flowers unfold in the moonlight. Symbol of a double nature that emerges from within the plant world and far from the idea of the garden as a solar place, the garden at night generates an imaginary space in which to rethink the relationship with the night and, at the same time, with the visible world .

In the work there are a series of passages and contrasts: from rare earths to their technological use (as a passage from the analogue world to the digital domain) and the passage between painting and vision, represented the first by the view of the painter’s studio that appears empty and the second from the emergence of a visual force which, like the screens of devices and unlike painting, has its own light in itself: an image that produces light without reflecting it.

Finally, the opposing modality of use in relation to ambient light, and therefore, to the passage between day and night which activates a conflict between image – nocturnal garden, with its poetic and phantasmagoric significance – and matter – rare earths with their current status of economical value. The dual use of Il giardino di notte is expressly designed to be part of a museum collection, as a work that, activated only at night and therefore potentially during the museum’s closing hours, generates an inversion in the production logic of art and in the relationship between audience and work.
